Vicky Lee Bakkedahl, 68, Deer River, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Friday, January 5th after a short battle with cancer.
Born on September 13th, 1955, in Zumbrota, Minnesota, Vicky was the daughter of Leroy Carl Busby and Pearl Audren Busby. She is survived by her son Ben (Jamie) Nelson, stepchildren Jon (Jennifer) Bakkedahl, Scott (September) Yoki, Tom (Laura) Bakkedahl, Jennifer (Mike) Calhoun, and several step-grandchildren. She was also survived by her dear companion Scott Peterson, who shared many cherished moments with her.
Vicky spent her formative years in Zumbrota, MN, graduating from high school and pursuing secretarial skills at a technical college in Rochester, MN. She began her career at the Zumbrota nursing home and then transitioned to the Mayo Clinic, serving as a secretary until her early retirement in 1990.
Relocating to the Deer River area with her late husband Russ Bakkedahl, they became proprietors of Riley's Cannibal Junction, a bar, and restaurant. Vicky devoted herself to the business, managing operations and overseeing the finances until shortly before her passing.
Her genuine affection for animals, including often underappreciated creatures like bats and mice, was emblematic of her kind and compassionate nature. Lake Bowstring held a special place in her heart, fostering cherished connections with numerous individuals over the years. She loved hearing the sound of the waves of the lake, often lulling her to sleep at night.
Vicky's caring spirit extended to everyone she encountered; she wholeheartedly supported and assisted those in need, embodying a deep love for people.
A visitation in remembrance of Vicky will take place at Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River, MN, from 4-6 PM on Wednesday, January 17th, 2024.
Vicky will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. Her love, generosity, and unwavering kindness will forever be cherished.
