Steph, loving husband/father/brother and uncle, died Friday, February 28th 2025 at home with family by his side. Steph was born in Deer River to Willard and Edith (Olson) Grossell. After high school, he joined the Air Force and then spent a year in Vietnam. He married his wife, Peggy Guthrie, in 1972 and they moved to Grand Forks. He attended the University of North Dakota where he had one of his greatest thrills playing football for UND. So much so, that few people knew he graduated with honors from the U of Minnesota.
His degree in Mortuary Science brought them back to Deer River and eventually they purchased Carroll Funeral Home. After retiring, Steph did mortuary cover work and worked at Cenex for several years. Steph enjoyed coaching Tball, little league and 7-8th football- for 30 years. He loved to golf and had many buddies who would play 27 holes a day with him. One of Steph’s fondest memories is having lunch with Pancho Villa.
He is survived by: Wife- Peg. Daughter- Erin (Jeremy) Nelson. Son-Sean (Caitlin) Six grandchildren: Scarlett, James, Stellan, Logan, Saylor and Brenna. Sisters- Cheryl (Victor, deceased) Williams, Susan (Dale) Etter, Rosemary (Greig) Olson, Grace (Paul) Rasley, Yvonne (Jim) Daigle, Marcia (Lee)Dowling, Teresa (Jeff) Huju and Edith (Frank) Hellmann. Brothers: Willard “Bill”(Elaine), James (Jeanne), Jerome (Theresa) and Matthew. Many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary.
