Shirley Mae Schultz

Shirley Mae Schultz, age 87, of Deer River, MN passed away on November 14, 2019 at Maple Woods Assisted Living.

Shirley was born February 18, 1932 in Cohasset, MN the daughter of Willis and Margaret (Gonion) Bemis. She grew up on a farm near Cohasset with her father and eleven siblings. Her mother passed away when she was very young.

Shirley married Paul Schultz on April 5, 1953. They raised their 3 children and lived and worked in the Deer River area. Shirley was always busy with family and working a variety of jobs until finally taking a position as cook for the Deer River School District retiring in 1991 after 20 years. Shirley enjoyed the company of her sisters and they traveled extensively throughout the years bringing home not only souvenirs but wonderful tales of their experiences.

Shirley was known for her exceptional baking especially caramel rolls and holiday cookies. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, canning pickles, berry picking, crafts, and weaving rugs on her floor loom. Through her generosity, it was easy to feel her love for family and friends. She will be missed for her quiet strength, work ethic, faith, love, and kindness as a mother, grandmother, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul Schultz, son Steven, and 9 siblings.

She is survived by brother Bill (Jan) Bemis of Cohasset and sister Edna (Will) Karjalahti of Spokane; Son Daniel (Deb) Schultz of Duluth and daughter Lynn (Mark) Rittmiller of Deer River; grandchildren Stacey (Adam) Greenside (Cameron, Aiden, Autumn Wright) of Duluth; Kyle (Amanda) Schultz (Theron, Marek) of St Michael; Andrea (Pete) Hussman (Nolan, Carson Kuck) of Coleraine; Mandy (Scott) Ramsdell (Gavyn) of Deer River; Marcie (Mitch) Witkofsky (Maddox, Mavric) of Grand Rapids; and Matt Rittmiller of Deer River; And many beloved extended family and friends.

Visitation with family and friends will be held at 1:00 PM followed by funeral service at 2:00 on Friday, November 22, 2019 at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 33297 State Hwy 6, Deer River, MN with Pastor Lisa Buchanan officiating. Final committal with family will be held at a later date.
