Sarah was the first to graduate from Deer River High School in the family and went on to graduate from Bemidji State University with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work. She believed in the traditional way of life and was a drum keeper, a quilter and made dancers regalia, especially for children, it made her happy to see the kids dancing in the regalia she made. She loved traveling to powwows and dancing traditional at all the local powwows she also took her grandsons to powwows to sing and waited patiently for them to get done so they would get home safe.

She worked for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, starting as a LL Headstart teacher, an Inger store clerk and for the longest the Program Manager for the MFIP Program at the LL Education Division, also for MCT for a time as a social worker, for a total of 54 years of employment.

Sarah was the eldest sister, so she was a very helpful person to all her siblings, nieces and nephews and she always had an open home for all those of us who needed a place until we got on our feet and she made sure we didn’t just fall apart. Her greatest joy was having her grandchildren follow the traditions, she was so proud of all of them.
