Roger Gale Wicklund, age 71, of Deer River, MN passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Essentia Health Deer River Hospital on June 11, 2026.
Roger was born on September 27, 1954 in Deer River, MN to Dale and Gloria (Jorgenson) Wicklund. He attended school and graduated from Deer River. In 1975 he married Susan Latvala and together they built a life and a family.
A bricklayer by trade, he was hardworking, took pride in building things that would last and believed in doing a job right. Those fortunate enough to know him well appreciated the knowledge he carried from a lifetime of experience.
Roger spent his life rooted in northern Minnesota, where he appreciated the simple things in life. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. He was also an avid collector who saw value in things others often overlooked. What many would call junk, Roger saw as possibility. His appreciation for old treasures and forgotten items became a passion he proudly passed on to his family.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Susan Wicklund; daughter Anna (Aaron) Hines Grand Rapids, MN; son Daniel (Karella) Hull Centennial, CO; grandchildren Tiauna (Charles Drilling) Hines Prior Lake, MN, Axel (Abrial Troumbly) Hines Grand Rapids, MN, Calli (Tyler Hagen) Wicklund Farmington, MN, Jayden, Reyce and Mason Hull Centennial, CO; great-grandchildren Hudson and Hoyt Hines and Rane Wicklund-Hagen; brothers Ralph (Rocky) Wicklund of Deer River, MN and Ryan (Gail) Wicklund of Henderson, NV; sister Gayle (Mike) Guthrie of Deer River, MN; Sister-in-Law Della Wicklund Las Vegas, NV; Brothers and Sister-in -Law Tim (Becky) Latvala, Dean Latvala, and Donna (Jeff) Jerry Deer River, MN; his faithful Great Pyrenees companion, Joe; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Gloria Wicklund, Father-in-Law Reynold “Norman” Latvala, brother Robin Wicklund, his beloved son Aaron Roger Wicklund and an infant daughter.
Roger will be remembered for his strong work ethic, independent spirit, love of fishing and remarkable ability to find treasure where others saw none. Whether casting a line, sharing his knowledge, or bringing home another treasure, Roger lived life on his own terms.
Though Roger was a private man, he believed the good news of Jesus Christ, that through His death, burial and resurrection, all who trust in Him receive the gift of eternal life. While his family grieves his loss, they find peace in the assurance that Roger is absent from the body and present with the Lord.
Per Roger’s wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. His family will honor and remember him privately with a celebration of his life at his favorite fishing spot.
