Richard Henry Jurvelin, age 90, fondly known as “Dick” passed away Saturday, January 6th, 2024, at the Essentia Hospital in Deer River with his family by his side.
Dick was born in Deer River on November 28th, 1933, to Henry and Olga Jurvelin. He grew up in Deer River and graduated from Deer River High School in 1951. Dick attended Minnesota School of Business then returned to Deer River and worked as a tailor for Slim Rainthorpe until he went into the Navy in 1956. After 2 years of service in the Navy, Dick returned home and started working for his mother and father at Jurvelin Hardware in Deer River. He also worked part time for John Carroll Funeral Home and Ambulance Service.
Dick was a Boy Scout Master, was instrumental in starting the Teen Club in Deer River, was a member of the first Ambulance service in Deer River, and joined the Deer River Fire Department in 1960, on which he served for 25 years. He also joined the Deer River Lions Club and was an active member for over 60 years. Dick was a member of the Masonic Lodge and served on the Hospital board for many years. He was an avid canoer and once paddled 500 miles in the Minneapolis Aquatennial Canoe Race from Bemidji, MN to Minneapolis. In 1963, Dick met Fern Raboin and they started their adventures together. They enjoyed canoeing, waterskiing, snowmobiling, downhill and cross country skiing, playing cards, and dancing. They married in 1968 and had 3 children together.
Dick enjoyed traveling and managed to visit all 50 states, plus Finland and London. However, most of his time was spent at Jurvelin Hardware where he worked until the age of 86, and he never missed a day of work. For 63 years, he was a staple at the hardware store and in our community. He enjoyed helping people, keeping busy with hardware store jobs, and most of all shoveling. After his forced retirement during Covid, Dick stayed busy at home with odd jobs, mowing, taking walks and spending quality time with his family.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Olga Jurvelin.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Fern Jurvelin; their children, Steve (Krystine) Jurvelin, Gary Jurvelin, and Julie Jurvelin, and his grandchildren Jenna Jurvelin, Cyle Jurvelin, Benny Jurvelin, Daniel Martin, Kaity Martin and Henry Jurvelin.
A visitation will be held at the Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River on Wednesday, January 10th from 5:00-7:00 PM. A mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Deer River at 11:00 on Thursday, January 11th, with a visitation 1 hour prior to the service.
Memorials will be directed to the Deer River Lions Club Swimming Program.
