Lewis Gilbert Bowstring aka Johnny Bowstring

Born 1/25/1939 at home in Inger, MN to Joseph and Grace Bowstring.

Died peacefully at his home in Bowstring, Minnesota on 11/27/2024 surrounded by family.

Lewis enjoyed spending time with family and friends for birthdays or just to get together, going out to eat, playing cribbage, picnics, attending pow wows, and going to the casino. He was an avid Twins fan and also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings. Lewis was an athlete his whole life and enjoyed playing baseball, softball, golf into his 80’s and was very competitive in tournament play in these sports. He loved being outdoors enjoying hunting and fishing with his sons, grandsons, many friends and took pride in teaching his sons and grandsons those skills. He grew up and lived his life on Bowstring Lake and river gathering, buying and selling wild rice to many.

Lewis worked for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Behavioral Health Division for 43 years and enjoyed socializing with his co-workers and the many people he met as part of his workday.

Preceded in death by an infant daughter Juanita Faye Bowstring, son Lewis William Bowstring, his father Joseph Bowstring, mother Grace Goggleye Bowstring, a brother Earl Bowstring, sister Florence Parker, and grandfather Sam Goggleye.

Lewis was married for 26 years to Agnes Guinn Bowstring and leaves behind his daughters Tina Benoit (James), Tami Jackson, Melissa Bowstring, Christina Bowstring, and sons Lawrence Bowstring (Kim), Franklin Bowstring (Trudy) and Bradley Bowstring (Amber). Brother’s Bruce Bowstring Sr (Carmen) Marvin Bowstring (Dolores), Eldon Bowstring. Sister’s Josephine Brown, Rose Smith (Donald) and Adeline/Dolly Bowstring. His grandchildren, James Benoit, Benjamin Benoit, Philip Benoit, Steven Smith, Carrie Berchard, Rebecca Williams, LeeLannee DeVault, David DeVault Jr., Nicholas DeVault, Robert Bowstring, Megan Bowstring, Joshua Bowstring, Franklin Bowstring, Maddison Bowstring, Jenna Oshie, Beth Quaderer, Jillian Quaderer, Dillon Gardner, Brittany Gardner, Bradley Bowstring, Brooke Bowstring, Branden Bowstring, Belinda Bowstring, Matthew Bowstring, Amber Bowstring, John Bowstring, Ryan Isham, Daniel Isham, Jacob Isham, Kristina Isham, Christian Anderson and his many great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
