Leonard B. Kossow was born in Deer River, Minnesota in the summer of 1929. Due to the times there are questions surrounding his actual year of birth leaving some to believe he was born in 1928 including the government. He was born to Henry and Cala Kossow and was one of the youngest of 12 children. Himself and some of his brothers served in the military for the United States of America, Leonard himself was a colonel’s assistant cook for two years. After leaving the Army he moved to Colorado to manage a Ski Resort. Before settling down Leonard and his friend Red Sjolund decided to hitchhike across the country to Texas. Every now and then getting lucky enough to be picked up by strangers for a couple miles to give their feet a break.
Once back in Minnesota Leonard met a teacher named Roberta who went by Bobbi soon after they were married and had four sons together Steven, Kevin, Michael, and David. Leonard bought a grocery store after his first son was born and later in life he became a butcher at a grocery store in Deer River. He was a part of what today is known as the Boosters Club while his children were in school. He was on the School Board and was a Firefighter. Throughout his years he enjoyed playing on the men's softball team in the summers. During the 50th anniversary of Deer River Football he was named the Oldest Deer River Football Alumni and was able to stand on the field one last time.
Leonard was able to pass down his memories of Deer River to his grandchildren remembering when buildings were log homes or pastures for horses and cows. He remembered when trails became dirt roads and later those dirt roads became the first paved roads to go through Deer River. He shared his childhood memories of playing in the creeks and running errands for his mother and father or watching his brother jump on a train after deciding to join the circus.
Leonard passed on the 14th of March while on Hospice under the care of his son Mike. In the comfort of the home he and Bobbi bought together and raised their four sons. Just as he wanted.
