Gregory Dean Swanson

Greg Swanson, 73, of Deer River, MN passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026 at his home on Deer Lake surrounded by his loving and supportive family.

Greg was born on October 23, 1952 in Deer River, MN to Gerald and Mary Ruth Swanson (Houser). He grew up on the south side of Deer River attending King Elementary and Deer River High School graduating in 1970.

On January 22, 1972, he married his high school sweetheart, Janet Danielson. Together they raised their children Todd and Stephanie.

Greg’s first job was working at the Deer River Coop Grocery Store. He was then employed at Minnesota Power as a Lead Utility Operator, retiring in 2010 after 37 years.

Greg enjoyed snowmobiling, golfing, fishing trips which included many years to Canada, hunting, pontoon rides on Deer Lake where he was always the Captain. He loved traveling around the state watching his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. He took much pride in maintaining his yard and preparing the firewood for the winter months. He was a fan of the Minnesota Wild, Twins and Vikings.

Greg is survived by his wife Jan of 54 years. Their son Todd Swanson (Kari) and daughter Stephanie Heers (Kevin). Grandchildren Abby Swanson, Haley Swanson (Andrew Blumhoefer), Naomi Kraling (Colten) and Tyler Heers. Sister Phyllis Cartwright (Terry), brothers Tom Swanson (Helen), Tim Swanson (Mary Jo), sister-in-law Pat Muelken, sister-in-law Barb Salisbury, brother-in-law Wade Salisbury and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Preceded in death by parents Jerry and Ruth Swanson, brothers Gary Swanson and Glen Swanson, father-in-law Don Danielson, mother-in-law Marcella Danielson, brother-in-law Bob Muelken.

Greg will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 19th from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at the Carroll Funeral Home.

Funeral service on Monday, April 20th at 11:00 A.M. at Carroll Funeral Home. Luncheon to follow at the Deer River Vets Club.
