Florence Mary (Cartwright) Gibbs

Florence Mary Gibbs (Cartwright) born in Deer River, MN on March 13, 1936 passed away peacefully at age 89 on May 23, 2025 at her daughter’s home in Kasson, MN. She was surrounded by her family.

Florence was a quiet person by nature. Her family and her faith were central to who she was. The happiest moments of her life were spent rocking babies, planting flowers, watching birds, and playing hostess to the many family gatherings held in her home throughout the years. Like many mothers, she embodied the quiet strength and steadfast love that both anchored and upheld those she loved. On May 3rd, 1957, she married the love of her life, Delano Gibbs. They spent most of their years together in the Deer River area, where they raised their children, and built a family business (Gibbs Wild Rice). In their final years together, they lived in La Prairie where they enjoyed more time with their family and grew to love neighbors that became like family. Florence remained in La Prairie for 12 years after Delano’s passing in July of 2009. Her last three and a half years were spent living with her daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Steve Hughes. They lovingly cared for her in their home until her passing.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd & Lillian Cartwright (Grossell), her brothers Larry, Bob, and Rollie Cartwright, sister-in-law Esther Cartwright, her daughter Sandy Surface, son Steven Gibbs and numerous Gibbs in-laws.

She is survived by her daughters Cindy Hughes (Steve), Lori Benke (Scott), her son Robert Gibbs (Gale), sister-in-law Sharon Cartwright, eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews & cousins and friends that have become family. Florence will remain deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
