Barbara Ann McDowell, 83 of St. Paul, MN passed away peacefully on December 26th, 2024 at United Hospital surrounded by loved ones. She was born on January 17th, 1941 in Hibbing Minnesota to John G. McDowell and Helen M. McDowell (Lindberg).
Barbara graduated from Deer River High School in 1959 and Bemidji State University in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She taught music in Melon, Wisconsin and Glencoe, Minnesota. In 1970 Barbara’s love of travel led her to Stuttgart Germany. In August of 1970 she began a 9 month study of music and education in Europe and remained in Germany until 1972.
Upon returning to the states Barb began working at the Bureau of Engraving. She later worked for US Bank processing annuities until her retirement at the age of 80 in March of 2020.
Barbara’s love of travel led her to countless destinations both domestic and abroad. She spoke fluent German and participated in continued German language education classes. Barb had many talents. She was an excellent seamstress, loved scrapbooking and continued to attend classes to improve her physical fitness and balance. Barb was well loved by many life-long friends and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Little Canada.
Barbara was preceded in death by her father John G. McDowell, mother Helen Lindberg and brother John A. (Hovey) McDowell.
Barbara is survived by her brother Thomas (Mary) McDowell, sister in law LuElla (John A.) McDowell, Nephews Greg McDowell, Shawn (Amy) McDowell, Nieces Colleen (Greig) Olson and Catherine (Jeff) Bryngelson, friend of over 30 years Carol Ingelbretson, and numerous great and great, great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Deer River Minnesota on Saturday, January 11th at 12:00 p.m. with visitation at 11:00 a.m.
